This game stayed under the radar the past year or so, at least for me, with other upcoming titles such as age of Conan, Tabula Rasa, and Warhammer Online holding my attention as I followed their development. I learned about hellgate from a friend a few weeks back, he knew that I had played Diablo 2 for a long time and explained that Hellgate was being produced by the same development team that was responsible for the Diablo franchise.
My first impression when starting the game was "This Isn't very challenging at all.." but anyway, the combat system was fun right from the get go, the graphics where top notch, and the atmosphere and art direction were great.
Later on..around level 15ish the game really starts to blossom as the battles get tougher, the enemies grow in number, and the combat trees really start to open up and give you choices. You will find yourself taking on different tactics for different situations theres always going to be that one gun that works better in one place and not as well in another.
The skill trees offer allot in the way of specialization and there aren't many dead skills that I've ran across.
Finally, the gear selection is the best I've ever seen...period. Theres always something cool waiting to be found.
If i had to sum up the play style of this game...i would say its like pieces guildwars, halflife, and diablo 2 crammed together and then some.
Some things that may turn other people off: no real player crafting, no persistent combat areas(see- guildwars) more skill based combat(see- fps/halflife) which may be a handicap for traditional rpg players, and finally..no consistent system of trade or sale..still the same old diablo 2 style text based trading with no item linking.
